ParticipantHi Kirsten and Laura! Thanks for sharing!
Regarding the birth date of Margaret Cullen/Cullin, I was also confused about her supposed birth date. Smithtree listed it as 1822, but you’re right that it’s confusing if her daughter Margaret Kent née Brown’s birth date is 1835. They don’t list any resources for this date, so I’m still looking for possible baptism and marriage records. I read that there were fires that destroyed many church records; this may explain why I haven’t been able to find any open-source documents for her yet.
I only have solid mentions of Margaret Cullen/Cullin’s daughter, Margaret Kent. When Margaret Kent was married and had her child, that branch was recorded at Portugal Cove (or at least that’s where Margaret Kent got baptized in 1862, if it’s the same family). Not all the original records are searchable yet, but I’ll try manually checking the various possible birth dates for Margaret Cullen/Cullin. Or Collins… There seems to be more info on Michael Browne’s first wife, Ann Bonia, than on Margaret.
As for the line of Philip Browne and Charlotte Penny, I haven’t traced as many descendants on that end as they’re my great-something uncle and aunt. Smithtree.net has listed many of the names you’ve mentioned, Kirsten, including Isabel Mary and Frederick Browne. I hope to find more baptismal records to verify Michael Brown’s (son of Patrick Brown b. 1791) descendants to link them back to Patrick Browne.
I am on ancestry but I’m adopted so we wouldn’t show up as DNA relatives.
Hope this helps!

ParticipantHi Brenda,
I am a descendant of Patrick Browne through his first son Michael Browne. Michael Brown (b. 1818) was born in South Island, so I’m guessing the Brownes landed in Newfoundland sometime before his birth. Michael married
Margaret Cullen (b. 1822), and their daughter Margaret (b. 1835) married a Kent. Her daughter Margaret married a Connor, and their son is my great-grandfather.Unexpectedly, my searches so far have found results from my father’s maternal line more so than the paternal line, but I’m thrilled nonetheless. I have yet to explore the trees of the other Browne children, but it seems they were merchants of a sort. Do you know what kind of merchants they were? By my great-great grandfather’s time the family was working in the mines in Harbour Main, so there may be an interesting story there!
As for the Kilkenny records, I am thinking of getting in touch with the local archive association. Someone told me they may still have the Church records for birth certificates from Patrick Browne’s time. I am particularly interested in finding out more about the Irish side of the family, and how they came to end up in Newfoundland. Do you have any suggestions of where else I could go to find out about the Brownes? One of your comments mentioned the Mi’kmaq people, so I would be greatly interested in learning more!
Many thanks,
Emma
