    Hi,

There are very few, if any, lists of passengers arriving in Newfoundland from Ireland. Since we were a British colony, no immigration permission was required and therefore no records were kept.

By the way I just discovered that a T. Cunningham was mentioned as a school teacher at Cape Broyle (south of Tors Cove) in the 1855 Report of Education for Ferryland District in the Journal of the House of Assembly of Newfoundland. Undoubtedly this was your Thomas Cunningham. Hopes this helps.

Thomas was a bit of a mystery man but here are some entries that I found.

    Diary of the Rev. M. P. O’Driscoll For the Years 1874 – 1881

    January 15th. Tuesday.[1878]
Heavy rain. Had to “ Call” to Bay Bulls at 6 ½ a.m. to Paddy Ryan. Noticed great improvement made during the fall on the “ Quays” road. Last night a “ Night School” was opened at Toad’s Cove, under the superintendance of Mr. John Molloy, the teacher of that place. 46 scholars were entered, from 13 to 40 years of age. “ Rule of Three” the most advanced rule, All able to read some. A “Night School” was also attempted at Mobile, but failed for the want of a teacher. Mr. Cunningham, who had engaged himself for the work, having refused to undertake it.

    January 14th. Tuesday.[1879]
Had a fine haul of wood, slide loads. Evening stormy. First sticks brought by Daniel FitzGerald and Sons for Mobile Chapel. On Monday, night school was opened in Mobile, Tors Cove and Caplin Cove. I visited schools of Mobile and T. Cove today, and found them well attended; 40 pupils at Mobile, 45 at Tors Cove. Mobile school in now conducted by Mr. Thomas Cunningham who took charge on January 1.
