MemberI am trying to find a birth record or baptism for my great grandfather, Ignatius Tucker, born sometime around 1860 or 1863, perhaps in Torbay, Newfoundland. Many years ago I was researching this side of the family and came across the marriage record at the Basilica in St. John’s for my great grandparents (Ignatius and Ellen ((Brennan)). Other details found at that time were that Ignatius was the son of Manuel and Patiene Tucker of Torbay (at least these were the names I extracted from the cursive writing). I could find no other information on Manuel or Patiene Tucker. Another relative of mine who was also curious about the Tucker side found something indicating Ignatius was a late baptism or the baptism was not recorded properly.
In my queries I have found the Tucker’s from Portugal Cove had a Manville (Mandville) and Patience Tucker. I am wondering if these could be my great great grandparents. Although I have found birth records for 6 of their children, none for Ignatius.
Family stories tell us that Ignatius and his sister(unknown name – she was apparently adopted) lived with “Granny” Walsh, an old lady in their area who took care of orphaned children. Our family is Roman Catholic, so we don’t know if Ignatius was baptized Catholic through birth, or through “Granny” Walsh became Catholic.
Any tips or advice on my search would be greatly appreciated.October 27, 2016 at 10:54 pm #4501Theresa Cantwell

MemberA little more digging and I did come across some more information. I did find the baptism record for Ignatius in Portugal cove RC records, the 6th child to his parents, in 1861. I also received info from someone on my grandfathers maternal side that Ignatius was placed in the care of the RC priest shortly after his birth as his mother had passed. Apparently there were rumors of infidelity (with a German man in the area??????) so Ignatius father (Manuel or Manville) gave him up to the RC church. I have not found any further information on Manuel or the older siblings of Ignatius in Portugal Cove. With some assistance, it is possible that my line of Tuckers are from a Thomas Tucker and Elizabeth Hanlon who were married in Basilica RC records around 1812. Perhaps Manuel/Manville is actually Michael Tucker (which seems likely since the first child of Manuel/Manville and Patience Tucker in Portugal Cove was a Michael). I am hoping to find out where my family line originated from. If anyone has any information, I would love to hear it.
