  • HI again Shane,

There is a record for a William Snow but the birthdate is not exact. This William is, in fact, a brother to the Edward Henry born 1818 that we believe to be the father of the Edward above who married Elizabeth Dormady. Here is the entry on the whole family from Dr West’s file on the Snow family that I obtained from this Society. I have not attempted to trace this William or any of the other siblings thus far.

    Edward & Elizabeth (Curtis)
    Edward Henry. 18 Aug. 1818 (31 Dec. 1818) Harbour Grace. f>PHW 38 & 45A & 111
    Elizabeth. 21 Feb. 1821 (3 Feb. 1822) Harbour Grace. DPHW 38 & 111
    Susan Elizabeth. 31 Jan. 1824 {6 Jan. 1825) Harbour Grace. DPHW 43 & 111
    Sarah Danson. 17 Mar. 1827 (1 Jan. 1830) Harbour Grace. DPHW 38 & 111
    William. 30 June 1829 (22 Nov. 1829) Harbour Grace. DPHW 38 & 111 ·

    Hi Shane,
I couldn’t find a William Snow born 1831 among my records. However, William is absolutely a Snow family name, all the way back to Jean (John) Snow and Elizabeth who came from the island of Jersey. There are many William Snows to be traced in Newfoundland. The interesting connection to Cape Breton that I have observed is that at the time of WW1, some of my Snow relatives who were not permitted to join the Newfoundland Regiment because of age (or whatever reason) went to “Canada” and joined there. This was often Cape Breton as they could sail to Sydney. I would trace back to when they appeared in Cape Breton and begin there I think. Anyway, not much help I am afraid.

And thank you, Barbara, for the information about the Simmonds family. I haven’t done much tracing of the siblings forward but I will keep that in mind. Conche and Argentia are very far geographically from Harbour Grace for the early 1800s. What took John and Ellen to Conche? The fishery?

    Hi Barbara,
None of Elizabeth Dormady’s siblings is named Ellen but her birth year makes her a contemporary. Elizabeth was born 1826. I finally found her birth information (which I had somehow missed at The Rooms but things were in quarantine and it was confusing) on an amazing site which I recommend to you to check out.

The entry for Elizabeth’s family is there under Dormady (and they take into account other spellings). Her parents were John Dormady and Mary Pearcey. There are six other siblings ranging from 1814 to 1833 born in Harbour Grace. There are quite a few entries for Dormady although on my quick perusal I couldn’t find a match for Ellen. Check other possible name variations. Or maybe Ellen was a second name of one of Elizabeth’s sisters. There are also Emberlys in the database too although the John I found didn’t match I think. I would do a deep dive into the collection.

The site is: mannioncollection.ca. All the best in your search! If we end up being related, please let me know.

    Hi Kirsten,

Unfortunately no, I haven’t come across the name Bruce Snow but I have really done no work on following the family lines to the present day for the Snows. I am still working on going backwards. Sorry to not be of help. I do plan to follow some lines forward to present day eventually and will contact you if that name comes up.
