FHSNL Lecture on January 28th

The next FHSNL lecture will feature Craig Morrissey who will speak about TBD. It will take place at 7:30pm on Tuesday January 28th in Hampton Hall at the Marine Institute on Ridge Road. There is no charge for admission.

Wanted: Church Records

At present the FHSNL website does not have copies of any church records, but we would very much like to make such records available. If any church wardens or other custodians of original parish records will permit it, we would be happy to photograph birth/marriage/burial registers and put them online. Feel free to contact our webmaster at dapike@mun.ca to make arrangements, etc.

Features on our Website

  • The most recent issue of our quarterly journal “The Newfoundland Ancestor”. Moreover, a complete set of back issues has been digitised and put on our website for our members. For non-members we have made available a sample issue that can be freely downloaded.
  • A guide to the genealogical holdings at our research centre can be downloaded by clicking here.
  • Voters Lists from 1955
  • Miscellaneous Deeds and Wills (volumes 1 to 22)
  • Signal Hill Visitors Books for 1913-1929, 1929-1939 and 1939-1954
  • Newfoundland Passports
  • 1836 Census (including nominal info from Fogo)
  • A searchable Vital Stats Pre-1892 Births Database with over 76,000 entries in it as of June 2019.
  • A “beta test” version of a web-based tool to enable members to Search the FHSNL Headstone Database.
  • Slides and audio recordings from several of our past lectures.
  • Interactive forums where we invite both members and non-members to post genealogical queries, etc.

Genealogical DNA Testing:

FHSNL has partnered with FamilyTreeDNA, which specialises in genealogical DNA testing. Family Tree DNA offers several types of DNA tests, including its autosomal “Family Finder” test that identifies relatives through a combination of maternal and paternal lines.

For direct paternal line testing (which involves testing a man’s DNA), you can also search for a corresponding surname-based DNA project among the many Projects at FamilyTreeDNA.

For direct maternal line testing, there is a Newfoundland and Labrador mtDNA Project that you can join if your direct maternal ancestral line involves Newfoundland and Labrador.
