Hello. I am new to the site, researching my mother’s family who lived in St. Johns circa 1860-1880ish.
John Henry Jackson was born in England about 1837, a mariner, and married Lucy Wadman.
They had 4 children: William Henry, Elizabeth Jane, John Knight and Thomas Alfred between the years 1862-1869 in St. John’s. They lived on Barters Hill.
Lucy died and I believe John Henry was then baptized in the catholic church the day before he remarried a woman named Bridget Quick from St. John’s.
I am trying to find out more. I think John Henry’s father William was married to Elizabeth Knight in England (thus the middle name of one son). Does anyone know where the Newfoundland Knight family hails from? This might help me source John Henry’s birth place.
Are there records for mariners to consider?. Any way to find out when they left Newfoundland (ended up in Montreal). I am curious about the time period.
Jackson is a common name and I am struggling to weed them out to correct family.
Thanks for any suggestions, maps, ship ideas…….cheers
