ParticipantHello, I have very little info on my 3rd great grandfather Thomas Byrne, born abt 1800 in Ireland, lived in St John’s in 1874 based on his will. Based on the children listed in the will I have been able to find more info on the children. His oldest daughter Catherine is my 2nd great grandmother, born 1830 in St John’s, died 1893 in Boston.
I do have a Cahill in my tree, born in Ireland, lived and died in Nova Scotia.
Regards,

ParticipantHello – Patricia – we may have met online before but I have lots of information on the Dobbin of NL and I’m quite willing to share. What names do you have in your branch?

My Paternal grandparents were William Dalton and Alice Cahill. The William’s Grandfather and Great Uncle (Dalton) left NL for NB in 1818 (married Mooney sisters). I am not sure where they lived in NL but were from Queens Ireland originally. I have no information on the Cahill’s. The earliest I have is Richard Cahill and Bridget Cronan listed on a marriage record for my Great Grandparents in 1872 (Halifax). I know that the Cahills were liquor dealers/grocers/hotel owners in Halifax (late 1800’s thru to 1950’s).
Have you or a family member had their DNA done? I have so we could see if there is a matchGreg Dalton, St. John’s

ParticipantHI Patricia,
I recently started researching my family tree to see how far back I could trace. My Great Grandparents on my dad’s side were Galway’s and lived/worked on Bell Island. I am pretty sure they are from the Harbour Grace area. Not sure if they are the same Galway’s but if you want to chat let me know and we can exchange some information.March 2, 2022 at 9:32 pm #6167Barbara Sopotyk
ParticipantHi Patricia,
My 3rd great-grandfather was John Byrne born approx 1822. He married Mary Dooling I believe and they had 3 children that I can confirm;
John 1840-1918 married Mary Simmonds
James 1843-1870 (unknown if married, family story says he was thrown over a cliff in Conche by the French, they later realized they had the wrong guy)
Mary Ann 1946-1918 who I believe married a McGrathI have come across two other children Timothy (b.1837) and Catherine (b.1844) no other info on them ..perhaps died as young children.
John died approx. 1855 and his widow married a George Roffe/Ralph and they gave birth to my Great great grandmother Annie Ralph whom married Joseph Emberly in Conche. Annie died from a fall through a fish flake.
If any of this links into the Byrne families you are aware of in your research would love to hear back from you.April 12, 2023 at 1:32 pm #6542Trena Byrne
MemberHi Barbara,
I came across this post from a year ago. I’m also researching the Byrne family. I have a picture of the old cross that used to be on Red Cliff, in Conche, commemorating John Byrne’s death in 1867. I’d love to compare notes!
