John Jellard was born in Fuge in the parish of Blackawton near Dartmouth, Devon in 1811. In 1828, he was crew on the Fanny a 60T schooner owned by the Carter’s of Ferryland. He married Eleanor Coulman in August 1835 in St John’s and they lived in Downs House, Ferryland until May 1845, when Robert Carter’s journal records them to be moving to St John’s. They lived, presumably in St John’s until c 1852, when they moved to Liverpool. Captain John Jellard was Master Mariner for the Carters’ with the Angerona; Bowring on the Symmetry, and Rogerson’s on the Isabella Helen.
I have not been able to find out where they lived in St John’s and wonder if there are any directories or other sources for this period – 1845-52?
His name was sometimes spelled Gilliard.
Many thanks in anticipation for any help you can give me
