I am the grandson of Ada Winsor Hickman. Her parents were William Thomas and Marion Mortimer Winsor of Carbonear. Marion’s parents were Captain William James Mortimer and his wife, Mary Ann. William died “on or about 22 July 1875” according to a court petition filed by his widow. I’ve been unable to find a record of William’s birth, baptism, marriage, or burial. I found a list of their children in the same court petition, but don’t know Mary Ann’s maiden name or when she died. Can anyone help me trace the Mortimer family? Thanks!-David Roones

I once read a student paper that stated that Capt William James Mortimer died at sea. I believe his widow’s maiden name was Mary Ann Wescott. The paper was written by John Babb and is now part of the collection at the Maritime History Archive.

David: Thanks so much for this lead! I contacted the Archive. They have four papers by J. Babb. The two most likely to contain info on Capt. Mortimer are a paper on the decline of the Salmon fishery, or a paper on the history of the Pike family. Was it the Pike family history that you read? I’ve often seen your family name in my research. You have deep roots!

    Hi David.

Yes, I believe it was Babb’s paper about the Pike family that contained this information. Capt William’s daughter Elizabeth Ada married in 1890 to Leander Pike, so that’s where the Mortimer-Pike connection comes into play.
