ParticipantHello
I’ve tried everything I know of to try and discover my gr-grandmother’s parents. Her name is Evelyn Julia POTTLE b1872 Flatrock, married 1895 Freshwater to James Edward HARVEY.
They had 10 children including my grandfather.
The Rooms don’t have Evelyn’s birth/baptism and there is not mention of her on any census till she married James.
I’ve searched FamilySearch, Grand Banks, Ancestry etc.
Am lost. I can’t get further back on her line without confirming her parents.
I’ve done AncestryDNA and am on GEDMatch.

ParticipantHello
My name is Eric Johnson. I am related to the Pottles of Flat Rock, Carbonear. I have done AncestryDNA and GEDmatch. My kit number is A692294. I have traced the Pottles to Thomas Pottle. Do you have an Ancestry.ca account username? I can give you access to my family tree. My username is Mapleleafs1963.
I have another question. Do you know if your Great grandmother had any nicknames or used a specific name such Evelyn or Julia that she may have preferred to use?
What is name of their oldest child and what year was the child born, please?
Eric Johnson

ParticipantHello Eric
Thank you so much for responding!
Yes I am on Ancestry and on GEDMatch.
My GEDMatch kit number is A270281. My Ancestry user name is STHL_NZ
As far as I know, my gr-grandmother was known as Evelyn. I know very little about her. I do know my Aunt was named after her.
Evelyn and James’ oldest child was Adeline b1895.

ParticipantHello,
I’m new to FHSNL and was looking through previous posts when your question caught my attention. (My wife is a descendant of William Thomas POTTLE & Patience Susannah EVELY.) After searching NGB baptisms for Carbonear and Bay De Verde Districts I could not find an Evelyn Julia POTTLE… so I searched just her forenames (a common transcription problem is PATTLE for POTTLE) but the only Evelyn Julia for 1872 +/- is Evelyn Julia PENNY on 5 May 1872 daughter of William PENNY and Mary. This may or may not be helpful. 😐
Cheers,

ParticipantHi Tony – thanks
The Rooms actually suggested Evelyn Julia Penny. I haven’t completely dismissed this possibility – but her marriage entry states she is Pottle.
If she is a Pottle, I think she is the daughter of William and Sarah Jane Pottle.
Someone had suggested she was the daughter of William T Pottle and Patience Susannah Evely, but they are too young to be her parents – I think William T is more likely to be her brother.
However, all the other births/baptisms are there for the other children, so why is Evelyn’s not?
So maybe she is a Penn(e)y and grew up with the Pottles? Who knows and how do I prove it?
The endogamy in this country means the DNA isn’t quite so straight forward.
Very challenging!
Thank you for your reply again, and apologies for the lateness of my reply
Kind regards SEONAID
